My back yard

It was this time of year 18 years ago that we first saw our house, and just how it looks today is what I fell in love with…

Sometimes the creek behaves badly, such as 3 years ago September… but even then, the rushing water is wonderful in an awe-inspiring sort of way (I realize that I can say this from the high bank with no water in my living room).

But I've learned in 18 years that my very favorite sound in the world is the summer night noises along a riverbank… spring peepers, faint splashes, frogs and insects in the trees.

And my second favorite sound is the ice going out, when on a warm Spring day the foot-thick ice breaks up with great cracks, and ice floes as large as a car crash into one another with forces that only nature can muster.
